MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Best Buy Co. said Friday that it has begun taking pre-orders for Amazon.com's new lineup of Kindle tablet computers.
The new Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, updated Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD will be sold at all Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile standalone stores, the electronics retailer said. They range in price from $69 to $499.
The new Kindle, updated Kindle Fire and 7-inch Kindle Fire HD will be available Sept. 14. The Kindle Paperwhite will arrive in stores in October. The 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HD with 4G LTE will be in stores before Christmas, Best Buy said.
Amazon unveiled the new Kindles at an event Thursday, as it steps up competition with Apple Inc. and its iPads ahead of the holiday season. The new Kindles also will be sold through Amazon.com and other retailers.
Best Buy shares rose 30 cents to $18.37 in afternoon trading, while Amazon shares rose $7.09, or 2.8 percent, to $258.47.
