The Ultima franchise originally debuted in the 1980s, and was created by Origin Systems and Richard Garriott. It consisted of seven different games all set in a fantasy world that came to be known as Britannia. Ultima Forever appears to be a re-imagining of Ultima IV: Quest for the Avatar, which was released on the Apple II, then ported to the NES and Sega Master System. EA obtained the rights to the series later.

"As huge fans of the Ultima franchise, the team at BioWare Mythic is not only excited to be able to bring this reimagining of the original rich world to the fans of the classic RPGs, but also to introduce a new generation of gamers who have never had a chance to discover why this is one of our industry's most beloved worlds," said Eugene Evans, studio general manager at BioWare Mythic.
The announcement was released at San Diego Comic Con, which kicks off Thursday and runs until Sunday. Comic Con has become a bigger venue for game companies to show off new titles and hardware. Gamers will be able to sign up for chances to be in the beta starting today at the page. The game will be released later this year.
