News Summary: Laptop-tablet hybrids at Taiwan show

NEW HOPE: Taiwan's struggling computer makers will showcase a new generation of ultra-thin laptops as alternatives to Apple's iPad and other hot-selling tablets. Other PC makers have also been looking to these ultrabooks for relief.

ON DISPLAY: Taipei's Computex, the world's second-largest computer show, will feature more than a dozen 12- to 17-inch models. They are laptop-tablet hybrids with such features as instant log on.

UNDER THE HOOD: They are powered by Intel Corp.'s new generation of 'Ivy Bridge' processors, which allow for more powerful and electricity-efficient computing devices than the typical tablet.
